Impurities and blackhead: how can you avoid them?

Stress, sweat, overexposure to sun, fatty sugar-rich food, and environmental factors can all lead to impurities and blackheads in the T-zone. Though we can't change your external factors, we can help you to combat these blemishes and say goodbye to pesky blackheads!

WHAT ARE BLACKHEADS?

Impurities – and, by extension, blackheads – often appear in the T-zone, which is comprised of the forehead, nose and chin.

A combination of excess sebum and dead skin cells causes pores to become clogged, resulting in the formation of blackheads.

Urban life, exposure to pollution and poor lifestyle habits are all factors that can be responsible for impurities on your face.

WHAT ARE BLACKHEADS?

HOW CAN WE PREVENT THEM?

Firstly, don't pick at blackheads! This can make them even worse! Secondly, make sure you cleanse your face thoroughly every day. Ideally, you should use the double cleansing method, which involves using an oil-based cleanser followed by a water-based one. That way, you can be sure of removing all those nasty particles that have built up on your skin during the day.

Many people wrongly believe that cleansing oils will make their skin greasy and aggravate sebum production, but actually, the opposite is true! Oils attract other oils, so a cleansing oil works like a magnet, lifting away traces of makeup, pollution, dust and dirt on the surface of the skin. By using a water-based cleanser immediately afterwards, you can remove any remaining oils and purify the skin surface.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO FIGHT IMPURITIES?

You've probably heard of charcoal face masks – and for a very good reason! Charcoal is your go-to ingredient if you want to get rid of pesky impurities! With both purifying and detoxifying properties, it helps to eliminate impurities and control excess sebum.

Our recommendation:

If you have combination or oily skin, apply a charcoal mask, such as our Black Scrub, once or twice a week.

For those with normal or sensitive-prone skin, once a week is enough. Charcoal is a powerful ingredient, and if it's used too often, it can make your skin feel tight.

What you need to know about lotions and toners!

WHAT IS THE POINT OF A LOTION/TONER?

At one point, toners were looked down upon by dermatologists for being too astringent and incredibly drying. They used to contain high concentration of alcohol to remove oil from the skin which was more detrimental to skin than beneficial. Long gone are the days when toners would dry and irritate our faces.

These days, most toners are more hydrating, alcohol-free and focus on more skin concerns than just treating acne and oily skin. Our lotions/toners main benefit is that it gives the skin a shot of hydration and dramatically enhances the moisturizing benefits of the products applied afterwards.

To help you understand how it works, imagine a sponge: if it's already moist, it will soak up more water than a dry sponge. A lotion/toner moistens the skin, so that – just like a sponge moistened with water – it will better absorb the products that follow. A lotion is different from a serum. It consists mainly of active water and works to moisturize the skin deep down while preparing it for further products. A serum has a much richer texture. Formulated with a high concentration of actives, it usually addresses a specific skin concern (such as redness, wrinkles, etc.) and provides targeted, powerful action.
